Video Styles are today’s blog category for Part 3 of our video trends for 2020. In our last two blogs we began 2020 with a predictive overview of video trends in both professional and amateur video in the new decade. It will be fun to see if our trends fade away into fads or lead us into new marketing strategies for the entire next decade.

Bullhorn Media’s Count-Down: Video Styles (Trends) for the New Decade

Embrace Your Digital Marketing Video Styles with the Super Powers of Professional Video and Photography.

Perhaps you would like a quick review.  Previously we have noted these trends:

Searchable Video will guide you to new resources while you watch your favorite videos, just like links in a blog.

We predict there will be a huge influx of companies creating “How-to” instructional videos.  We would be remiss if we did not remind you that creating this type of instructional video is a Bullhorn Media specialty.  (So, if you have a business, gather up your content and come talk to us about making your product more user-friendly through video this year.)

The experts predict, “What’s interesting about this trend is that people, in increasing fashion, already go looking for videos to answer how-to questions more often now than in the past. For how-to questions, videos are justifiably more useful content.” And we must agree, “Well Said.”

Video Styles:  Dimensions Galore

We predict you will be seeing more video platforms, beyond YouTube, Instagram, and FaceBook.  And in addition, they will feature some different types of dimensions.  We are all quite accustomed to rectangular and square formatted videos. But how many vertically formatted videos have you seen?  Well, you will see plenty of them at TikTok, the new social platform where you make a video representative of your day, your mood or your talent.

The vertical format makes this blogger feel like the point-of-view is a peek into a private world through a shuttered down space.  It’s very different from the expansive space we are used to in a horizontal platform, like television and movie formats.

And it’s a little like watching a film through a doorway. But many of the videos feature song and dance, so we can see how some content fits the framing.

Vertical Video or Square Style Format?  Pausing Our Judgement Until 2020 Ends

Your Business Might Require Several Styles of Video to Meet the Marketing Needs of 2020.

We will see how this vertical trend continues in future months.

For the moment, TicTok has charmed and interested thousands and proven people will watch almost anything, given it is unique.  “TikTok is the leading destination for short-form mobile video. Our mission is to inspire creativity and bring joy.”

Warning: Vertical Trend in Video Styles

We warn you that watching these little video slices of real life, made mostly by real people can become at least as habit-forming as Facebook kittens.  Confession:  This blogger watched a faucet of running-water with hand-held scissors approaching the stream for quite a few seconds. Then we realized the scissors were never going to cut through the stream.

Conversely, we also witnessed a very professional product-shoot of a consumer demonstrating a popular foot-washing tool. We saw the foot scrubber expertly groom every surface of the foot with care and precision. And yes, in just a few seconds, the result was a nice, clean, soft foot. The irony was, with the tool adhered to the shower floor, the man never had to reach down or bend over to wash the foot.  They did not need words to make their point:  That’s viral marketing TikTok style.  As 2020 continues, we’ll see if it’s just a fad or a trend.

“As more video platforms get introduced, the preferences for video dimensions, whether your video is in square, horizontal, or vertical format, will expand. With Snapchat and Instagram Stories, vertical video has increased its popularity dramatically. In fact, YouTube and Facebook video support it.”

We make note that Instagram could not force vertical video on its users, and has reported they will now support normal horizontal video in IGTV.

Snapchat announced back in May of 2019, “the vertical experiment is now over.”  Likewise, the square video never really made it as a popular trend on Facebook or YouTube.

So what will be the style as we progress through 2020? All we can say is we will be watching to see if the public craves square or vertical format as time goes. As video styles develop, we will see if we retain the status quo of horizontal format for video.

Definite New Trend in Video Styles:  Silent Movies

Consumers Will Get More Help from How-to Instructions for Business Products.

Who would have guessed that the idea of watching videos with the sound turned off would become a trend?  It has, you know!

Video Styles Requested by Our Clients

Have you noticed the trend of silent videos?  Business Clients are requesting videos with nice subtitles.

  • They also want to add ample animation, to clarify information about assembly or usesage–very customer-friendly info, like directions.
  • Likewise, they are asking for us to add more still shots to their informative or marketing videos.
  • All of these requests add up to the trend that videos styled with these additions can make sense without sound.

This has been a subtle but definite trend, a special style probably enhanced by those silent autoplay videos first seen from Facebook.

11. Video Styles in Ads:  Styles will Become More Immersive and Longer

In a previous blog, we mentioned the growing popularity of 360 videos, AR and VR.  Therefore, the experts agree that immersive advertising will help consumers virtually see how much better life can be after buying a special product.

One way to look at this development is to “Imagine being able to simulate the product you’re selling, allowing users to see which color would suit them best or how the product will fit into their life?”  We have already seen this almost happen with a popular online lingerie company. They size and measure consumers through the magic of the Smartphone.

The video style of the future will often combine the live camera with VR or AR experiences. Imagine virtually handling a product before you buy it.  That is the stuff of dreams. This has been the dream of advertisers for generations.

Have you noticed that video advertisements are getting longer?  Media Radar researched this suspicion.  They discovered some interesting data:

  • “Among the findings: the percentage of six-second ads on YouTube declined by 20% year-over-year to 16.5% of all ads.
  • By comparison, the number of 30-second ads rose by 19% year-over-year to 24% of all ads.
  • Fifteen-second ads made up a plurality of YouTube ads, accounting for 47% of ads on the Google-owned video platform.”
